E-Commerce Reboot: Track 3 Operations (2/6)
Strategic VS Non-Strategic operations
Time to Read: < 2 minutes
Hi there! 👋
Today, we’re switching gears to talk about something crucial for every business: Strategic VS Non-Strategic operations.
This is where things get really practical.
In any business, you are probably wasting too much time on non-strategic things.
In order to spot non-strategic activities, you need to know what they are.
We start by breaking everything in your business into two categories:
1️⃣ Strategic - Anything that drives profits. Think advertising (Meta, email, SMS, direct mail), sales, and product work that leads to new business.
2️⃣ Non-Strategic - Anything that doesn’t, like admin and staff functions, busywork, or legacy IT support.
Both categories can include actual costs that show up on your financials, or time, like processes or requirements that don’t appear on financials, such as a useless meeting.
Here’s the kicker:
👉 You want to spend up on Strategic functions and cut Non-Strategic functions to the bone.
Your future business should channel most of its time, energy, and resources into Strategic operations.
Sure, you might not be able to do it all on Day One, but you should aspire to outspend your competition on #1.
And yes, you should continue to invest here regardless of the macro-economic climate.
The goal is to align your spending with what truly drives your business forward and ruthlessly trim away the rest.
Next up; we’ll take a look at how to cut organizational sludge.
Stay tuned.
Have a great day,
Erik
